Referring to your letter No.0.R.4677/27 of the
29th. July, I am directed to point out that the War Office refer to
the cost of internment and maintenance of four categories of enemy
subjects, namely:-

(a). Those arrested in the Colony.
(b). Those removed from British merchant ships calling at
the Port.
(c). Those brought into the Port by H..Ships.
(d). Those taken in the course of Military operations and
removed from occupied territory.
I am to request that you will be so good as to
supply a statement showing seperately the expenses incurred in
respect of each of these four categories. His Excellency the
Governor is without nuthority from the Secretary of State for the
Colonies to pay any of these charges and he proposes to address hil
on the subject as soon as he knows what the expenditure involved is.
